    a random update!

It's strange, the times that I feel an urge to update a bit are the times when I have a ton of work waiting for me. It might be part of my need to procrastinate - "Instead of chipping away at this intimidating mountain of work, how about we go on facebook and check up on friends? How about we play with our vanity in puricute.com? How about we write on that dusty ole Xanga?" And this is my thought process.

It's April, and finally the weather in Buffalo is slowly slowly drifting towards bearable (if you don't count the snow last week...), if bearable means pretty sunshine coupled with windy and chillyish weather. You would've thought that after 4 years at Cornell I would have had enough of lovely lake-effect weather, but I guess I'm a tad masochistic

Speaking of Cornell, I actually went back to visit for a day or two with my boyfriend, and it was simultaneously nostalgic and bewildering. Did I really hike up this damn hill every day? When the heck did Hong Kong fast food become a grill place?! But yeah, it was nice... got to see all my spots, the Uris Rock Garden, one of my favorite places, Sage Chapel, Big Red Barn, etc. They're constructing the new Physics buildling, it looks like it will be HUGE. Ben would be thrilled!

I found it amusing that my boyfriend is really scared of the gorges and was unable to approach the fence, even to look over. And when the bridge shook slightly, an expression of complete, pants-crapping fear came over his face. So classic.

What was kinda sad was China Night was playing the night we left! I would've loved to have stayed and seen it I used to love going to all the undergraduate shows... JUSA's Japan Night, HKSA, CSA, blah blah... fine, all the Asian ones, I guess! Must break out of my Asian-centric world!

On another note, I'll be visiting Korea, Japan and China this summer. HA!

    Happy Valentine's Day!

Okay, so I know it's actually the day after Valentine's Day. And I know that there are people who think that Valentine's Day is an over-commercialized fake holiday that puts undue pressure on current couples and alienates singletons... but I think that's if you take it too seriously. After all, Valentine's Day is just like any other day.... except it's a day where it's socially acceptable to be publicly mushy and cuddly  (without going to extreme PDA). Plus I think it's a good catalyst for singles... it's a day when you can muster up the courage to make that date with that special someone you've been thinking of.  And who knows what will happen!

In the US, V-day is the guy's burden - he has to be thoughtful and caring and sweep his girl off her feet, with roses/chocolates/gifts! Which I don't mind at all But I kind of like the way they do V-day in Japan and Korea - on Valentine's Day, it's up to the girl. Traditionally, she makes handmade chocolates and gives them to the boy of her choice - how sweet! And then there's White Day on March 14th, where the guy returns the favor to his honey with gifts. And I love this - there's also Black Day, on April 14th, where singles get together to eat Jjajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) to celebrate their singleness. Sounds kind of fun to me!

Anyways, I'll admit that I like fake holidays, or just days where you're designated to do something. Like Pi day, like Speak Like a Pirate day. It's just for fun! So have fun with it

Your Valentine's Day Personality is Friendly
You think of Valentine's Day as the perfect chance to show people you care.
It's not exclusively a romantic holiday for you. You like to celebrate with your friends too.

Valentine's Day makes you nostalgic for cute cards and cheap candies.
You love the idea of a Valentine's Day where everyone feels included.

  • Wow, as soon as school starts I barely have time for anything else. What with LKS, pharmacy classes, TA, chinese, work, and attempting to have a meager social life... I barely have time to study and actually do classwork!

Anyways, today is the Lunar New Year We'll be celebrating the Year of the Ox!

    the once and future friend

Being back in the city means getting hold of all your city friends to come out and play! And when you're only back for a week, it gets a little hectic trying to cram everyone in and make sure you don't miss someone. After all, since I'm only in the city for one or two weeks I really want to see everyone as much as possible! I don't have the luxury of hanging out whenever... it's now, dammit! Now or next year!

So yeah, I've been seeing some of my old friends the past few days. And it's strange... these are friends from junior high school, high school/college.... people who I used to see everyday, day after day, for years and years. And now, for me at least, it's come to the point where I only get to see them once or twice a year. Depressing . It's hard to keep that bond strong and know what everyone's business is. I guess that's why I started keeping a blog again, so at least people can sorta follow what's going on in my life - lol, if they even care!

You know what was so great about college? Besides having someone else clean the bathrooms at the dorms, and having food served to you without cooking? For me, it was the utter convenience of friends. Feeling a bit lonely? Just pop over to the next room, or walk to the next dorm and hang out. It was just so easy But now you have to e-mail/call/text each other and figure out locations to meet, and then there's transportation, and everyone lives so far away, etc etc... it's an absolute obstacle course of inconvenience. It's a miracle that people even get together now. Which is why I'm so thankful when friends actually come out for you... it shows they care! I loves it.

Anyway, this is kinda one of those pointless posts about what I was thinking about. Just appreciating all the peeps who came out, not for me particularly but just for each other. At least friendship is stronger than train delays and interborough commuting Yeah! Keep it up! I wanna see everyone next year too!

    Happy New Years! Yeah 2009!
Wishing that everyone a terrific new year, full of joy and happiness...
and just enough bad stuff to make you appreciate the good stuff

SoooooOOooooOoo... Originally I wrote a long long post while at the airport in Athens, Eleftherios Venezelos... but then, the 45 minutes free wifi cut out. So yeah... suffice it to say, I just got back home in Brooklyn, happy and whole but sorta lightheaded from lack of sleep and jetlagged. Nevertheless I will force myself to stay awake so I can quickly readjust my internal clock! STAY AWAKE! STAY AWAKE!

No matter how good a trip is, it's always a relief to come back to your home... There's nothing like coming back after a 9 day trip and breathing a sigh of relief because the goldfish are still alive and haven't eaten each other. And then you set up your laptop and check facebook, gmail, and xanga... not necessarily in that order. And then you look through the pictures... ahh, the pictures.  Let's just say that on average I took 103.2 pictures a day - no kidding, I just calculated it.

More Things I Learned in Greece:
    • Stray dogs and cats are all over the place! Usually if it's one animal it's not the other... maybe they have territories? Anyways, people need to spay and neuter their pets! I'm all for cute and cuddly animals... but not homeless ones
    • When in 'flight-mode', my phone can last for 9 days without charging! And still have 87% power at the end of it.
    • Don't have your room key? A time-tested method is climbing from a balcony. Recommended for hotels with less floors.
    • It is very expensive to call China without a phone card...
And now, top 3 pics of the day:

a crappy panorama picture of of Cape Sounion, which is famous for a temple to Poseidon, god of the sea.

The temple of Apollo at Delphi, which was famous for its oracle. It's high on a hill and part of a much larger complex with a theater, stadium, etc etc.

A pic taken from the moving bus. In the background is 'Sleeping Agamemnon'... can you see his profile, and his chest? Orange trees in blurry foreground.

    Must... not... take... nap.........
